Taking time out of teaching is common. Whether for family reasons, a career change, or time abroad, many teachers step away from the classroom for several years. When considering a return, a key question arises: do you need to retrain?
The good news is that once you hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), it does not expire. This means you remain a qualified teacher, even after a long break. However, there are practical steps to take before returning.
Do teachers have to retrain after a break?
In most cases, you do not need to retrain from scratch if you already hold QTS. Instead, schools and local authorities may ask you to:
- Refresh safeguarding and child protection training.
- Update knowledge of the national curriculum and assessment requirements.
- Demonstrate recent classroom experience, often through returner programmes or volunteering.
- Undertake professional development (CPD) to rebuild confidence and skills.
Retraining is only necessary if you want to switch routes into teaching (for example, from unqualified teaching to QTS), or if your qualification was gained overseas and needs recognition in England.
What support is available for returning teachers?
The Department for Education (DfE) runs programmes to help teachers re-enter the profession, offering guidance, training, and resources. Many schools also provide tailored support for returners, including induction-style mentoring.
