If you’re thinking about becoming a teacher, one of the first questions you might ask is how long Initial Teacher Training (ITT) takes. The answer depends on the route you choose, your qualifications, and whether you train full-time or part-time.
On average, ITT takes between one and four years to complete, with most postgraduate routes lasting just one academic year.
If you’re starting your university studies, an undergraduate degree that includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) usually takes three to four years full-time. This combines your subject or education degree with practical school placements.
If you already have a degree, postgraduate ITT such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) generally takes one academic year full-time, or up to two years part-time.
For experienced teachers without QTS, the Assessment Only route can be completed in as little as three months, depending on how quickly you can evidence your teaching standards.
The time it takes to complete ITT can vary based on:
Mode of study – Full-time courses are faster; part-time options allow for greater flexibility.
Previous experience – Those with significant classroom experience may qualify through shorter routes.
Level of qualification – Starting without a degree means you’ll need to complete undergraduate study first.
We offer teacher training in Essex with a range of options to fit different schedules, backgrounds, and career goals.
The duration of your training impacts not only when you can start teaching but also how much classroom experience you gain before qualifying. High-quality training, regardless of length, ensures you’re fully prepared to meet the demands of the profession from day one.
At Catalyst Academies Trust, we believe learning doesn’t stop at QTS. Our trainees benefit from continued professional development during their Early Career Teacher (ECT) years, ensuring they grow in confidence and expertise well after their ITT ends.
Whether you’re looking for a one-year postgraduate route or a longer undergraduate pathway, Initial Teacher Training is the essential first step towards becoming a qualified teacher.
