How Long Does Initial Teacher Training Take?

If you’re thinking about becoming a teacher, one of the first questions you might ask is how long Initial Teacher Training (ITT) takes. The answer depends on the route you choose, your qualifications, and whether you train full-time or part-time.

On average, ITT takes between one and four years to complete, with most postgraduate routes lasting just one academic year.

Typical course lengths

1. Undergraduate degree with QTS

If you’re starting your university studies, an undergraduate degree that includes Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) usually takes three to four years full-time. This combines your subject or education degree with practical school placements.

2. Postgraduate teacher training (PGCE or SCITT)

If you already have a degree, postgraduate ITT such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) generally takes one academic year full-time, or up to two years part-time.

3. Assessment Only (AO) route

For experienced teachers without QTS, the Assessment Only route can be completed in as little as three months, depending on how quickly you can evidence your teaching standards.

Factors that affect training length

The time it takes to complete ITT can vary based on:

  • Mode of study – Full-time courses are faster; part-time options allow for greater flexibility.

  • Previous experience – Those with significant classroom experience may qualify through shorter routes.

  • Level of qualification – Starting without a degree means you’ll need to complete undergraduate study first.

Why ITT length matters

The duration of your training impacts not only when you can start teaching but also how much classroom experience you gain before qualifying. High-quality training, regardless of length, ensures you’re fully prepared to meet the demands of the profession from day one.
