Overview
At the heart of its community since 1914, Aveley Primary is a two-form entry school for children aged 3–11. Over more than a century, Aveley has grown from serving a small village to supporting a thriving, diverse population. Its most significant chapter of change began in February 2019, when it joined Catalyst Academies Trust and embarked on a structured journey of school improvement.
In June 2023, Ofsted recognised this transformation with a ‘GOOD’ rating, a leap from its previous ‘Requires Improvement’ judgement. By 2024, Aveley achieved its best-ever Key Stage 2 results, with 85% of pupils meeting the expected standard in Reading, Writing, and Maths, significantly above the national average.
Challenge:
Before joining the trust, Aveley Primary faced below-average Key Stage 2 results and was judged ‘Requires Improvement’ by Ofsted.
Solution:
Catalyst Academies Trust worked closely with school leaders to implement targeted improvement strategies, redesign the curriculum, and provide leadership coaching and school-to-school support. Investment in teaching quality, data-led interventions, and a focus on whole-child development ensured sustained progress.
Results and impact:
Parent feedback reflects this transformation:
“I always feel my child is safe, happy and making good progress.” (Year 2 parent)
“I think that teachers are very good. They are patient and like their job which makes them perfect people to teach my son.” (Reception parent)
Catalyst Academies Trust’s support for Aveley has included:
Sinéad Viner - Head of School
With over 25 years in education, Sinéad led Aveley to its best-ever KS2 results and improved its Ofsted grade from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’. She also established the ARC, providing specialist provision for 10 pupils with autism. Passionate about staff development, Sinéad coaches teachers, LSAs, and future leaders to strengthen practice and deliver sustained improvement.
Hollie Watts - Assistant Head (EYFS & KS1)
Hollie’s leadership in early literacy has transformed reading provision. She implemented Whole Class Reading, developed an inclusive reading spine, and introduced a new phonics scheme, enabling Aveley to meet or exceed national phonics expectations. Her work ensures every child builds strong foundations in reading and writing.
Aveley’s ethos and the trust’s vision are closely aligned, with a focus on high expectations, excellent teaching, and enabling every child to flourish. At the centre of this vision is a pledge to develop “whole people” - young learners who achieve academically and thrive socially and emotionally.
“Pupils are clear about the high expectations adults have for behaviour and learning. Pupils live up to these expectations well and try hard to achieve their best.” (Ofsted, 2023)
This holistic approach is supported through tailored teaching, rich enrichment opportunities, and a strong emphasis on wellbeing. Pupils leave Aveley confident, responsible, and ready for the next stage of their education.
“Leaders are equally ambitious for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Pupils with SEND enjoy the same learning opportunities as other pupils. They work independently alongside their friends in most lessons.” (Ofsted, 2023)
“Pupils in the school’s autistic resource centre (ARC) receive expert support. This helps pupils successfully work towards their individual targets.” (Ofsted 2023)
Aveley’s grounds are designed to support both learning and play, with three playgrounds, a large field, multi-use games area, wildlife area, and pond. The library bus is a unique feature, alongside specialist spaces for art, design, and technology. An outdoor gym and climbing equipment encourage active, healthy lifestyles.
Aveley Primary’s progress reflects the power of partnership within Catalyst Academies Trust. With continued support, the school is committed to raising standards even further, expanding enrichment opportunities, and developing staff expertise to benefit every child.
