  • Does QTS expire?

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is the accreditation that allows teachers to work in most state-maintained schools across England. Once achieved, it confirms that you meet the professional standards for teaching and are recognised as a qualified teacher.

A common question for aspiring and returning teachers is whether QTS has an expiry date. The short answer is no: QTS does not expire once awarded.

    What happens after gaining QTS?

Although QTS itself is permanent, teachers must complete two years as an Early Career Teacher (ECT). During this period, new teachers receive support and mentoring to help them apply their training effectively in the classroom.

After successfully completing the ECT induction, teachers remain fully qualified with no requirement to reapply for QTS. This status stays with you throughout your career, even if you take a break from teaching.

    Can you lose QTS?

While QTS does not expire, it can be withdrawn in very rare cases of serious professional misconduct or if directed by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA). For the vast majority of teachers, QTS is a lifelong accreditation.

What can change, however, is your registration with the teaching workforce. For example, if you move abroad, work in a different sector, or step away from teaching for several years, you may need refresher training or updated safeguarding checks before returning to the classroom.

    Why continued professional development matters

Even though QTS is permanent, teaching is a profession built on continual growth. Education evolves, and staying up to date with the national curriculum, classroom practices, and safeguarding requirements is essential.

At Catalyst Academies, we support teachers at every stage of their journey. From initial training to structured CPD and mentoring, our collaborative approach ensures that teachers not only gain QTS but also remain confident and effective throughout their careers.

    Taking the next step

QTS does not expire, but ongoing training and development are key to a successful teaching career. Whether you are just starting out or considering a return to the classroom, professional support can make all the difference.
