Teaching assistants (TAs) play a vital role in supporting pupils’ learning and helping teachers create positive, inclusive classrooms. If you’re passionate about working with children and want to make a difference in education, becoming a teaching assistant could be the perfect career path.
Here’s what you need to know about how to get started.
Teaching assistants work closely with teachers to support pupils’ learning, manage classroom activities, and help children reach their full potential. Their responsibilities can include:
Supporting pupils who need extra help, including those with special educational needs (SEN).
Preparing materials and classroom resources.
Assisting with group activities and individual tasks.
Helping to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
Supporting teachers with lesson delivery and pupil progress tracking.
TAs can work in primary, secondary, or special schools, and the role often offers flexible hours and opportunities for career growth.
You don’t necessarily need a degree to become a teaching assistant, but schools typically look for:
Good literacy and numeracy skills (GCSE English and maths, grade 4/C or above).
Relevant experience working with children or young people.
A recognised TA qualification, such as:
Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education.
Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
Some schools provide on-the-job training for entry-level roles, while others prefer candidates who have completed formal qualifications.
Practical experience is key to becoming a successful teaching assistant. You can build this by:
Volunteering in schools or youth groups.
Completing work placements as part of a college course.
Working in childcare, tutoring, or mentoring roles.
At Catalyst Academies, we offer a structured apprenticeship programme in partnership with Chelmsford College, giving aspiring teaching assistants the opportunity to train directly within a school setting. The duration of the programme is 18 months - 2 years for level 3 and 1 year for level 2. Trainees spend four days each week gaining hands-on experience in the classroom and one day completing college-based learning at Dilkes Academy. This school-led approach helps build real confidence, practical skills, and a strong understanding of daily classroom life.
Interviews are held over the phone with the Chelmsford College Lead. Successful applicants at this stage will be invited to a Catalyst Academies Trust school of their choosing to read an age-appropriate book to a small group of pupils, followed by an interview.
