  • How long is a primary teaching apprenticeship?

A primary teaching apprenticeship in the UK typically takes around three years to complete. The exact length depends on the provider and structure of the programme, but most are designed to combine a full degree, classroom experience, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) into one pathway.

This extended timeframe allows you to develop your teaching skills gradually while gaining real experience in a school setting.

Why does it take several years?

Unlike shorter training routes, a Primary Teaching Degree Apprenticeship includes both academic study and practical teaching experience.

Over the course of the programme, you will:

    • Work in a school as an employed member of staff

    • Study towards a Bachelor’s (Hons) degree in Primary Education

    • Train to meet the Teachers’ Standards

    • Develop your teaching practice through observation and assessment

Because you are building both academic knowledge and classroom experience at the same time, the programme is structured over several years to ensure you are fully prepared for the role.

    What happens during each stage?

Although programmes can vary, most follow a phased structure:

    • Early stage: You observe lessons, support pupils, and begin to understand classroom routines

    • Middle stage: You start planning and delivering parts of lessons with guidance

    • Later stage: You take on increased responsibility for teaching, assessment, and classroom management

This gradual progression helps you build confidence and competence in a supportive environment.

How long is the programme with Catalyst Academies Trust?

Catalyst Academies Trust offers a Primary Teaching Degree Apprenticeship lasting 36 months (just under four years), delivered in partnership with Brighton University.

During this time, you are fully employed within one of the Trust’s primary schools in Thurrock, Essex, including Grays, South Ockendon and Aveley.

    The structure includes:

    • Monday to Thursday in school, gaining hands-on teaching experience from day one

    • University-directed study every Friday, with 75% delivered online and 25% face to face

    • Three weeks of university-based training in Brighton each year

    • Ongoing support from a mentor, university tutor visits and a Trust ITT manager

In Year 2, you will complete a six-week placement in a contrasting school within the Trust, helping you broaden your experience and develop your teaching practice.

Over the 45 months, your teaching responsibility increases gradually, ensuring you are fully prepared to lead your own classroom by the end of the programme.

Is a longer training route beneficial?

While a longer programme may seem like a big commitment, it offers several advantages:

    • More time to build confidence in the classroom

    • Greater depth of practical experience

    • Continuous mentoring and feedback

    • A smoother transition into a full teaching role

For many trainees, this gradual approach leads to stronger long-term outcomes and career progression.
