The Primary Teaching Apprenticeship in Essex is a 36-month programme delivered in partnership with the University of Brighton.

Apprentices are employed by Catalyst Academies Trust and placed within one of its primary schools in Grays, South Ockendon or Aveley. They earn a salary of £24,000 per year and do not pay tuition fees.

Throughout the programme, apprentices work towards:

• A BA Honours degree in Primary Education

• Qualified Teacher Status

• A PGCE qualification

• The practical skills and classroom experience needed for a teaching career

Participants are immersed in school life from the beginning of the apprenticeship. Their teaching responsibilities increase gradually as they develop their knowledge, confidence and experience.

University study is combined with structured classroom practice and high-quality mentoring. This makes the programme a practical alternative to a traditional full-time university route for people who want to earn a salary while training to become qualified teachers.

The Primary Teaching Degree Apprenticeship is specifically designed as a route into teaching. It is separate from Catalyst’s Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, which prepares participants for a classroom support role and does not itself lead to a teaching degree, Qualified Teacher Status or a PGCE.

Begin a Career in Classroom Support Through a Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

For people who want to gain experience supporting pupils and teachers, Catalyst Academies Trust also offers a separate Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship in Essex.

This programme combines practical experience in a school with weekly college learning delivered on-site at Dilkes Academy.

Apprentices develop the core knowledge and skills needed to work effectively as teaching assistants. Training covers:

• Child development

• Safeguarding

• Communication

• Reading support

• The everyday responsibilities of supporting pupils and teachers

The apprenticeship allows participants to build confidence in a real school environment while learning how teaching assistants contribute to classroom routines, pupil progress and inclusive education.

It may be suitable for school leavers, career changers and people who want to begin a career in school-based support.

The Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is not a teacher training qualification and does not lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status, a degree or a PGCE. Its purpose is to prepare participants for work as teaching assistants.
