  • When Should Teachers Apply for September Positions?

September is one of the most popular times to begin a new teaching role. It marks the start of the academic year, allowing teachers to meet their classes from the first day, establish routines and contribute to curriculum planning from the beginning of the autumn term.

However, schools often recruit for September positions several months in advance. Teachers who wait until the summer holidays to begin their search may find that many permanent positions have already been filled.

So, when should teachers apply for September positions? In most cases, it is sensible to begin researching opportunities between January and March, with applications becoming particularly active during the spring term. Vacancies can appear earlier or later, so checking regularly and preparing in advance will give you the best chance of finding a suitable role.

When Do Schools Advertise September Teaching Jobs?

There is no single date when every school begins advertising September vacancies. Recruitment takes place throughout the academic year and depends on staffing plans, pupil numbers, school budgets and when existing teachers confirm that they are leaving.

Some schools begin advertising positions during the autumn term, particularly when recruiting for senior leadership or specialist roles. However, many classroom teacher vacancies for the following September begin to appear between January and Easter.

Recruitment often becomes especially active during the spring term. By this point, schools usually have a clearer understanding of their staffing requirements for the next academic year.

Further vacancies may be advertised during May, June and July. These later opportunities may arise because a previous recruitment process was unsuccessful, a teacher has resigned, pupil numbers have changed or additional funding has become available.

Teachers should therefore avoid relying on one short application window. The most effective approach is to begin looking early and continue checking trusted vacancies pages throughout the spring and summer terms.

    A Suggested Application Timeline

Although every candidate’s circumstances will be different, the following timeline can help you organise your search for a September teaching position.

September to December: Research and Preparation

The autumn term is a useful time to think about what you want from your next role.

Consider the age group you would like to teach, the type of school environment that suits you and how far you are prepared to travel. You may also want to think about whether you are seeking a full-time, part-time, permanent or fixed-term position.

Use this period to update your employment history, gather examples of your achievements and think about the experience you could include in a supporting statement.

You can also research schools and academy trusts in your preferred area. Catalyst Academies Trust partners with Aveley Academy, Benyon Primary, Dilkes Academy, Quarry Hill Academy and Sommers Heath Primary across Thurrock, Essex.

Learning about the schools before vacancies appear can help you make more informed decisions when positions are advertised.

January to March: Begin Applying Actively

The beginning of the calendar year is a good time to start monitoring vacancies closely. Some schools will already be recruiting for September, while others may begin advertising later in the term.

Set aside time each week to review new positions. When you find a suitable vacancy, read the job description and person specification carefully rather than sending the same application to every school.

Your supporting statement should explain how your experience, teaching approach and professional values match the specific position.

Catalyst brings together current roles from across its five primary schools on the Catalyst Academies Trust vacancies page. Opportunities may include roles for experienced teachers, early career teachers, support staff and apprentices, with both full-time and part-time positions available at different points during the year.

March to May: Expect a Busy Recruitment Period

The period around Easter and the first half of the summer term is often particularly important for September recruitment.

Schools may be arranging shortlisting, interviews, lesson observations and other selection activities during this period. Candidates should be ready to respond promptly to invitations and make the necessary arrangements with their current employer.

If you are already teaching, check the notice requirements in your employment contract before accepting a new role. Notice arrangements can vary, particularly between different schools and academy trusts, so do not assume that the same deadline applies to everyone.

Submitting applications before your contractual deadline can help you avoid unnecessary pressure and give your current school enough time to plan.

    June to August: Continue Looking

It is not necessarily too late to find a September teaching position during the summer.

Although many roles will have been filled, schools may still need to recruit because of unexpected departures, changing circumstances or unsuccessful earlier recruitment rounds.

Later vacancies can move quickly. Make sure your application documents are ready and check your email regularly after applying.

Teachers who remain flexible about location, year group, contract type or working pattern may find suitable opportunities during this period. However, you should still research the school carefully and avoid accepting a position simply because September is approaching.

When Should Early Career Teachers Apply?

Early career teachers should usually begin researching September positions during their final training year. Starting early gives you time to learn about different schools, attend recruitment events and prepare a strong application.

You do not necessarily need to wait until you have completed every part of your training before applying. Schools regularly recruit trainee teachers for positions that begin after successful completion of their course and the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

When comparing early career teacher roles, look beyond the job title. Consider the quality of the school’s induction programme, access to mentoring, professional development and the wider working culture.

Catalyst Academies Trust focuses on supporting teachers and leaders to deliver excellent provision for pupils. The trust is consistently ranked within the top 5% of trusts nationally for Key Stage 2 results, reflecting its commitment to strong leadership, effective teaching and high expectations.

Trainees gain practical experience in Catalyst schools while learning from experienced teachers, mentors, headteachers and university lecturers.

Training pathways are available for primary education across the 3–7 and 5–11 age ranges. Depending on the chosen route, trainees can achieve Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE with up to 60 Master’s credits.

Catalyst reports that 100% of its trainees have gone on to work in schools in Essex, with 95% securing roles within its partner schools in Thurrock.

Applications for teacher training also have their own timescales, and popular courses or placements may fill before the beginning of the academic year. Anyone hoping to start training in September should explore the available ITT teacher training pathways as early as possible.

Can You Qualify Through a Teaching Apprenticeship?

Applicants without a degree may be able to enter teaching through Catalyst’s Primary Teaching Degree Apprenticeship.

This 36-month employment-based programme is delivered in partnership with the University of Brighton. Apprentices are employed by Catalyst Academies Trust, earn a salary of £24,000 per year and do not pay tuition fees.

Throughout the apprenticeship, participants work towards a BA Honours degree in Primary Education, Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE while gaining experience in one of Catalyst’s primary schools in Thurrock.

For those who want to build school experience before committing to teacher training, the Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship in Essex offers another possible starting point. It combines practical classroom experience with weekly college learning delivered at Dilkes Academy.

How to Prepare Before Vacancies Appear

Preparing early will allow you to respond quickly when the right role is advertised.

    Before beginning your search:

    • Update your employment and training history.

    • Identify strong examples of pupil progress and effective teaching.

    • Prepare information about curriculum knowledge and classroom management.

    • Ask potential referees whether they are happy to support your application.

    • Review your current contract and notice requirements.

    • Research schools in the area where you want to work.

    • Practise common interview and lesson-observation tasks.

You should also consider arranging a school visit where this is encouraged. A visit can help you understand the school’s atmosphere, expectations and approach to teaching before you submit an application.
