     How to apply

Applications are made through the Department for Education’s Apply service. Search for “Teach Thurrock" or "Teach Catalyst” to find our postgraduate teacher training and school direct teacher training programmes.

The selection process involved four steps. We’ll start with a short teaching task with pupils, followed by a written task, and a discussion of a research article. The final step is an interview with headteachers from our partnership schools.

Successful candidates start full-time training in September 2026, with opportunities to gain school experience throughout the year.

What is Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)?

QTS is the professional accreditation confirming you meet the Teachers’ Standards and are ready to teach in maintained schools in England.

    How do I get QTS?

You can gain QTS by completing approved initial teacher training (ITT), which combines classroom placements with academic study.

What is the difference between QTS and a PGCE?

QTS is your professional teaching status, while a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) is an academic qualification at Master’s level. Many trainees, including those at Teach Catalyst, gain both together.

    Does QTS expire?

No, once you have QTS, it is valid for life. You will, however, complete a two-year induction period.

    Can I teach without QTS?

Most schools require QTS, though some academies, free schools, and independent schools can employ teachers without it. Having QTS widens your employment options.

How long does initial teacher training take?

Full-time courses, like our school-centred initial teacher training programme, take one academic year to complete.
